From tape measure to parts list
Measure accurately. Plan the right fence.
A good fence plan starts with accurate measurements. These three steps help you record lengths, corners and the gate so you can check your choices in the fence planner.
Plan fence now- 1Run {count}: 6 m
- 2Run {count}: 4 m
- 3Gate offset
- 4Gate
Measure each run separately
Mark the start, end and every corner of your planned fence. Measure from each marked post centre line to the next corner or end point, following the fence line rather than cutting across the site.
Write down the runs in order. For a closed layout, include every side. Also check that the corners really are right angles.
Include the gate in your measurements
The gate width in the planner is measured from the centre of one gate post to the centre of the other, not the clear opening. It is already part of your measured run. Do not add it to the fence length again.
Choose the run and position for the gate. For a gate “Within the run”, measure from the start of the run to the centre of the first gate post. Also check space for the gate leaves and the installation requirements.
Check variant and sketch
Choose the panel height, colour and installation method. The confirmed spacing for full fence sections is 2 m from post centre to post centre. The planner calculates the panels and matching posts needed.
Compare the finished sketch with your site. For slopes, wall mounting or angles other than 90°, ask us about a suitable solution before ordering.
Your checklist
- All runs measured in metres and listed in the correct order.
- Corners, open ends or closed layout checked.
- Gate width, run and distance from the start of the run decided.
- Installation method chosen and finished sketch checked against the site.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the gate position affect the parts list?
A gate divides a run into sections. Its position affects how many full panels and cut panels are needed on each side. That is why you should choose its position before ordering.
Is the total fence length enough information?
For a straight fence, its length is enough. For several runs, the planner also needs each run length and the direction of each turn. The total length alone does not describe your layout.
What does “Gate position not yet decided” mean?
You will first get a provisional plan. To create a configuration you can order, choose the gate position and check the sketch. The provisional quantities may change.
